A small start in Maboneng
Creation Africa Foundry works from Maboneng, Johannesburg, sourcing African craft for homes, shops and hospitality projects. The first year was about building trust one maker and one order at a time. We began with a modest collection of handmade textiles, ceramics and artisan goods, sourced from makers whose work carried both skill and story.
Back then, many customers wanted authentic pieces but needed help understanding where they came from, how they were made and how to care for them. From the beginning, we treated that information as part of the product. We introduced simple provenance notes, wrapped items carefully for local delivery, and learned quickly how to pack delicate ceramics so they could travel safely through Johannesburg traffic or across provinces.
Building maker relationships
As orders increased, so did the need for a steadier sourcing rhythm. Those early years were spent meeting makers, visiting studios and understanding the practical side of working with handmade stock. Lesego Qwabe later joined to formalise maker partnerships, while the team refined how each collection was selected, photographed and described. It was never only about volume. It was about consistency, good communication and fair expectations on both sides.
During this period, we developed a working structure that still guides us today:
- clear maker briefs for custom curation and seasonal editing
- basic quality checks before pieces are listed or packed
- provenance cards to explain origin, materials and care
- practical lead times for made-to-order and bulk requests
These years also taught us the value of working with natural materials in South African conditions, especially for customers in coastal cities where humidity can affect textiles and ceramics if they are stored poorly.
From local orders to wider delivery
Over time, customers were ordering from beyond Johannesburg more often. Deliveries started moving regularly to Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and Gqeberha, with collection consultations and courier coordination becoming part of the daily workflow. Lindelwa Ramoroka later took on export and logistics, helping us plan packing standards for long-distance shipments and international courier requirements.
We also began supporting hospitality styling and retail wholesale enquiries, which meant thinking beyond individual purchases. Hotels, guesthouses and shops needed grouped selections, repeat supply and dependable packing. This was the period when Gift Packing, Sample Loans and Bulk Order Planning became real service lines rather than occasional favours. The business became more organised, but it still kept the hands-on way of working that mattered from day one.
Careful growth through changing times
These were difficult years for many businesses, and ours was no different. Travel changed, buying patterns shifted and makers needed steadier support. We focused on practical trading: smaller batches, tighter stock control and closer customer communication. Sipho Khumalo strengthened customer experience, making sure enquiries were answered with accurate timings, packing notes and delivery updates, especially when load-shedding and courier delays affected normal routines.
We also put more work into how collections were edited. Zinhle Maseko refined merchandising so that seasonal ranges made sense for gifting, hospitality and retail buyers. Instead of overloading the range, we curated with purpose, choosing pieces that could travel, display well and hold their value. This period confirmed that a careful, measured approach was better than chasing fast turnover.
- better packing for fragile ceramics and mixed-material orders
- more precise stock rotation for textiles and artisan goods
- closer coordination with makers on timelines and quantity
- greater focus on South African shipping realities and export packing
A broader African selection
As the marketplace matured, our selection grew beyond a single city or province. We widened our maker network across the African continent, keeping the same focus on authenticity and useful workmanship. Musa van Wyk joined to support digital content, giving each collection a clearer voice and helping customers understand the origin and use of what they were buying. The stories behind the pieces became easier to follow, but the emphasis stayed practical rather than decorative.
By this stage, our services had settled into the full set we offer today, including artisan sourcing, custom curation, hospitality styling, retail wholesale, export packing and seasonal editing. We also began handling more collection consultations for interior buyers and more bulk order planning for events, lodges and corporate gifting. Ziyanda Magagula strengthened marketplace operations, keeping the back-end work organised so orders could move from enquiry to dispatch without confusion.
Today: A Johannesburg base with far-reaching delivery
Today Creation Africa Foundry operates from Maboneng, Johannesburg, with reach into Sandton, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Midrand and Soweto, as well as international destinations through courier partners. What has stayed constant is the way we work: thoughtful selection, careful packing and respect for the maker behind each item. Lindani Mavuso still guides the business with a practical eye on growth, while the team handles sourcing, customer support, merchandising and logistics as one connected process.
Our history is not a story of rushing ahead. It is a story of steady trading, better systems and stronger relationships year by year. From the first textile or ceramic sale to the broader range we manage now, the aim has remained the same: to connect people with African-made pieces that are well chosen, properly presented and ready to travel. If you are ordering for a home, a shop, a hotel or a gift programme, that same care is still built into every step.
